Conference Rationale
Feedback plays an essential role in the formation and evolution of galaxies. Without feedback, semianalytic models and cosmological hydrodynamic simulations fails to reproduce the stellar mass function of galaxies. Yet, the physics of feedback from supernovae and active galactic nuclei are poorly understood. From an observational standpoint, galactic winds are detected but their masses and prevalence are highly uncertain. Hence, it is not clear if observed winds can really achieve what theorists expect them to do.
At a time when feedback emerges as the main outstanding problem in galaxy formation, this conference aims to bring together the leading experts in the field from both observations and theory. The meeting also aims to break the community barrier between extragalactic astronomers with a cosmological background and physicists of the interstellar medium, so that a new deeper understanding may emerge from their concerted effort.
